Course Outline
Math Honors 1 leads to IB Mathematics Higher Level and is intended for students who have very strong abilities in mathematics. It aims to develop logical and analytical thinking, as well as inductive and deductive reasoning among students. Algebraic skills are strengthened to enable students to solve more challenging problems. Geometric concepts and theorems are introduced and integrated with the study of algebraic skills and problem solving. The course is demanding and only suitable for very able students who are prepared to put in extra work.
Class Resources
The primary class resource is your binder which should include all lessons, assignments, quizzes, tests, in appropriate sections withdividers. Keep your binder organized and complete and take pride in its appearance. You may keep a separate notebook for your notes.
The textbooks listed below should be signed out from the textbook center as soon as possible:
- Algebra 1 (Holt, red cover), Geometry (Holt, orange cover)
The above textbooks are a resource, and the majority of homework will be photocopied sheets of a more appropriate Honors difficulty level. You do no need to bring these textbooks to school.
You can also access a lot of the class content (homework assignments and due dates, assessment dates, semester calendar etc.) on the Mathematics Honors 1 blog.
Tutorials
All students are welcome to attend tutorials which are available in the classroom after school every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:30 until 2:50. Tutorials are a time for students to clarify any questions they have from lessons, homework and/or assignments. Students may voluntarily attend, although in some cases attendance may be required at the request of the teacher to catch up on homework or to make up quizzes or tests due to absence. Please arrive on time to take full advantage of these tutorial sessions.

Assessment
Students will be assessed through a combination of major assessments, minor assessments, regular homework and a summative exam (There will only be an exam in second semester). Tests and large projects are classed as major assessments; quizzes, smaller projects and other smaller assessment items are classed as minor assessments. The percentage weighting for each grade is given below:
| Grade 9 | Grade 10 | Grade 11 & 12 | ||||
| Sem 1 | Sem 2 | Sem 1 | Sem 2 | Sem 1 | Sem 2 | |
| Major Assessments | 55% | 44% | 55% | 44% | 60% | 48% |
| Minor Assessments | 30% | 20% | 35% | 28% | 35% | 28% |
| Homework | 15% | 12% | 10% | 8% | 5% | 4% |
| Semester Exam | 0% | 20% | 0% | 20% | 0% | 20% |
It is expected that should a student be absent from class he/she will check the blog and speak with a classmate to see what homework or assessments may have been missed. Likewise, the student should speak to the teacher as soon as possible once returning to school to arrange to catch up.
